Little Words for Little People

(Parts 1 & 2)

Little Words for Little People (Parts 1 & 2) is a beginning reading comprehension, literacy skills program that has been carefully designed to develop capable, efficient young readers and writers. It is user-friendly for students, teachers, and parents. When Parts 1 and 2 are used consecutively, students can be reading, and writing at a second grade level or above within months. For example, beginning first graders can be reading and writing at a second-grade level by mid-year.

Reading Comprehension

Little Words for Little People (Part 1) teaches letters, words, and numbers; reading comprehension; writing; listening; problem-solving and critical thinking. Activities include writing upper and lower case letters of the alphabet, reading and writing numbers, writing sentences, solving problems, and reading and writing the first 448 most frequently used words in the English language. The included vocabulary cards enable students to make these high-frequency reading comprehension words their very own. Little Words for Little People (Part 1) addresses all of the basic literacy skills: reading, writing, language, comprehension, and critical thinking required for success in other schoolwork, on today's standardized tests, and in everyday life.

Reading Comprehension

Little Words for Little People (Part 2) reinforces all of the literacy skills learned in Little Words for Little People (Part 1). These elements, combined with concept words such as who, what, why, where, how, and when, and the most frequently used grade-level words, form the basis for passages and activities that promote grade-level and above reading comprehension, writing, problem solving and critical thinking. Students learn how to read a passage and acquire the skills used in determining the main idea, identifying cause-and-effect relationships, predicting outcomes, making inferences, identifying and understanding factual information, and how to edit, punctuate, spell, and proofread. Research indicates that these are the reading comprehension and critical thinking skills required for success in school, on writing samples, on state assessments, and in everyday life.

The program provides a dynamic, interactive approach to learning that integrates student learning styles with reading comprehension, grade-level vocabulary development, writing, speaking, listening, spelling, punctuation, problem-solving, and critical thinking. It is user-friendly for students, teachers, and parents. Students are, at all times, actively engaged in those critical thinking activities that are essential for success in school and life beyond the classroom.

Literacy Skills

Each lesson places emphasis on the development of the following reading comprehension strategies: determining the main idea of a passage, identifying factual information, sequencing events, identifying cause-and-effect relationships, depicting information in a new form, and infering traits, feelings, and motives of characters.

The lessons also include the creative use of colorful vocabulary cards for high-frequency words, allowing students to expand quickly their grade-level and above word bank and make these high-frequency words their own.

Jump Start II is a complete reading comprehension, literacy skills program that teaches students the reading comprehension, writing, grade-level vocabulary, and critical-thinking skills necessary for success in all reading and problem-solving activities in school, on standardized tests, norm-referenced tests, on writing samples, and in real life. It provides opportunities for students to increase significantly their grade-level and above vocabulary through the use of colorful vocabulary cards.

Each of the nineteen lessons includes vocabulary acquisition, skill development, reading comprehension, and writing activities that are equal to or exceed expectations required in all content areas. Jump Start Careers 1 is a reading comprehension, literacy skills program that develops all of the literacy skills around a theme that relates to careers. All lessons include grade-level and above vocabulary development, reading comprehension, writing, listening, speaking, and problem-solving. Students learn literacy skills that integrate their reading comprehension and writing ability and, at the same time, they acquire career knowledge that prepares them to make wise personal and academic decisions relating to future career choices in the areas of work and college.

The vocabulary, reading comprehension skills, and reading passages expose students to a variety of literacy skills and information that establishes a thinking system or "thinking kit" for the learner that can be applied in any critical-thinking or problem-solving situation.
